This hand-held, battery-powered device measures room dimensions ultrasonically and allows you to estimate home improvement materials like a pro, giving answers to questions on how much paint, wallpaper, wall panels, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, and carpeting are needed for a job and even what size air-conditioner and heater to buy.

This unit was originally sold through the Sharper Image catalog and later marketed as the Seiko HC-1000 ProMeasure Plus Digital Ultrasonic Distance Estimator.
 
I've used it many times. It's a sophisticated, tapeless measuring tool that accurately measures distances up to 33 feet or 10 meters (a special "sum" button doubles maximum measuring distance). You are able to measure all the dimensions of a room and instantly calculate the area and volume from measurements stored in memory.
 
It also stores common building references for flooring, ceilings, etc. allowing you to estimate the amount of materials you'll need to finish the job. For contractors, the HC-1000 features some neat job costing calculations too!
 

This is not gimmicky thing-a-ma-jig. It's a powerful tool aimed at professional home improvement
